How to Tell What Horse You Are Riding in Red Dead Redemption

In the tradition begun by the cars of the "Grand Theft Auto" games, Rockstar's "Red Dead Redemption" for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 offers a vast selection of horses for protagonist John Marston to roam the Wild West upon. Unlike the "GTA" series, "Red Dead" doesn't display the breed of horse at the bottom of the screen. With 20 horses available, it can be a little difficult to remember all the color differences.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the horse's deed. For better horses the deed becomes available after a wild version of the horse has been broken. Once the deed is purchased the horse is added to the stable at MacFarlane Ranch and can be called upon at anytime. If a wild horse is killed another of that same breed is gained by purchasing the deed.

    • 2

Select the deed to the horse in the menu. Once the deed is selected this horse will be automatically called upon unless the horse is killed or has a break or a new deed is selected.

    • 3

Check the deed in the menu at any time to see which horse is currently selected.

    • 4

Learn to distinguish between the different horses by sight. The better horses in "Red Dead Redemption" have distinct colors. For instance, of the three fastest horses, the Kentucky Saddler is golden with a cream-colored mane and tail and a white strip down its face, the American Standardbred is a pure black horse and the War Horse is also black, but has a white mane and tail.
