Connect the HDMI cable to the television or monitor.
Connect the other end of the cable into the PS3. The video output ports for the PS3 are located on the rear of the console and the HDMI port is clearly labeled.
Turn on both your PS3 console and the display. To turn on the PS3, press the power button on the front of the console or press the "PS" button on the PS3 controller.
Select the HDMI input channel on the display. All displays have different controls, but typically, a "Video Mode" or "Video" button on the remote or front panel will cycle through video inputs.
Select your PS3 user account and press the "X" button to log in. The PS3 home screen will be displayed.
Select the "Settings" icon on the PS3 home screen, select "Display Settings" and then press the "X" button. The "Display Settings" screen will appear.
Select "Video Output Settings" and press the "X" button.
Select "HDMI" and press the "X" button. A confirmation screen will appear.
Press the "X" button to confirm the video output mode change. A list of video resolutions will appear. The PS3 will scan the display and automatically check supported video output resolution modes.
Select "Continue" and press the "X" button to move to the next screen, which is an aspect ratio selection screen.
Select "16:9" if you have a widescreen display or "4:3" if you have a display with a standard aspect ratio. Select "Continue" and press the "X" button.
Review the settings and select "Continue" and press the "X" button to confirm. The video settings will save.
Press the "A" button to go back to the PS3 home screen.
