Things You'll Need
Instructions
Obtain the boot loader file for the operating system you are installing. Most Linux distributions come with a boot loader file included in the distribution. If the boot loader is not included in the distribution, download the boot loader from the website of the operating system you are using.
Create a new folder on your storage media. Name it "PS3" (without the quotes).
Create a second folder inside the PS3 folder. Name the new folder "otheros" (without the quotes).
Place the boot loader file in the "otheros" folder. Rename the file "otheros.bld" (without the quotes).
Insert the storage media into the PS3. If the storage media is a USB device, insert it in the USB slot on the front side of the PS3.
Select the "Settings" tab on the PS3 main menu and navigate to the "System Settings" tab. Select "Install Other OS." The system will search for the removable storage media for the boot loader.
Follow the on-screen instructions during the installation. The instructions will vary depending on the boot loader you are using.
Navigate to the "Settings" tab, followed by the "System Settings" tab. Under the "Default System" setting, select the "Other OS" option.
Restart the PS3. The PS3 will then start using the boot loader.
Insert the installation disc for the operating system you wish to install. Not every operating system is supported. As of 2010, the only operating system that supports the PS3 are versions of Linux, such as Fedora or Ubuntu.
Start the OS installation. The installation command will differ depending on the operating system. Some require you to just press "Enter," while others will have a command for you to type. Refer to the operating system's instructions for the specific command needed.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. If the error message "No applicable installer was found" is displayed, check the folder names and file names in the storage or disc media.
