The Playstation 3 was the first major home video game platform offering a hard drive as a standard feature. Starting with the first revision of the product line up, Sony began offering an 80 GB hard drive.

- The 80 GB PlayStation 3 hard drive is a 80 gigabyte (GB) 2.5 inch serial advanced technology attachment hard drive. This means that the hard drive communicates by utilizing a high-speed serial cable over two pairs of conductors. This is the same type of hard drive connection used by most personal computers.
Brand
- Sony installs Seagate Momentus 5400.2 hard drives in the PlayStation 3. This family of laptop hard drives is available in sizes starting at 20 GBs as of 2010. The 80 GB device was also utilized in several laptop brands.
Performance
- The 80 GB drive spins at 5400 rpm and has 8 MB of integrated memory cache. It's capable of transferring data at up to 150 MB's per second. It features a 2.5 inch notebook form factor.
