How to Erase a PS3 Hard Drive

The PlayStation 3 video game system uses a hard drive to store game information, installations and downloaded items from the PlayStation Network. When you prepare to send your PS3 in for service or if you intend to sell your system, you may wish to clear the hard drive. Sony provides a useful tool to quickly reformat and erase data contained on your PlayStation 3 hard drive. As PlayStation.com points out, it is necessary to back up any data you wish to keep before formatting your PS3 hard drive. When you are sure you are ready to fully delete the information on your hard drive, the format function allows you to do so.

     Use the wireless PS3 controller to select "Settings" from the XMB home menu.

     Choose "System Settings" under "Settings" and press the "X" button on the wireless PS3 controller.

     Choose "Format Hard Disk" and press the "X" button.

     Select "Yes" when the PS3 system asks "Do You Want to Format the Hard Disk?" and press the "X" button to proceed. The hard drive will be formatted and all data contained on the hard drive will be erased.
