How to Copy Update From External HD to PS3

Like many current-day video game consoles, the PlayStation 3 requires occasional firmware updates to keep it running smoothly. While anyone connecting their PlayStation 3 directly to the Internet can update the console using an option on the XMB (cross media bar) seen when powering on the console, updates are also done using your PC and an external memory device such as a flash drive or external hard drive. Copying the update from an external hard drive to your PS3 is easily done by anyone, but requires a bit of preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest PS3 firmware update from PlayStation.com (link below in "Resources" section).

    • 2

Save the file in a folder titled "UPDATE" (all caps). Save that folder in a folder named "PS3" (all caps).

    • 3

Copy the PS3 folder to an external hard drive (click Start on the taskbar, click Computer/My Computer, and drag the PS3 folder to the hard drive icon).

    • 4

Eject your hard drive from your computer (select the USB icon on the notification area of the taskbar and choose to Safely remove or eject the hardware).

    • 5

Connect the external drive to your PS3 via any of its USB ports.

    • 6

Power on your PS3 and, under the Settings list on the XMB, select System Update.

    • 7

Select Update via storage media. Your PS3 will walk you through the rest of the process to update your console.
