How to Stream a DVD to PSP

Sony&'s PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld gaming system with multimedia capabilities. Besides playing games, you can use it to play music, watch movies and view pictures. Due to its size, it does not have a DVD drive, but you can use its integrated Wi-Fi to stream DVD movies from your home network or the Internet.

Instructions

  1. Rip the DVD

      Insert the DVD into your computer and run the DVDx program (see the download link in the Reference section below). DVDx is a freeware program that can copy movies from DVD to your hard drive. Copying a DVD to your computer is called "ripping."

      In the window that opens, navigate to the DVD drive and select the file "VTS_01_0.IFO." This will tell your computer where to find the video files it will copy. The "Input Settings" window will automatically open at this point.

      In the Audio section of the Input Settings window, select an audio track from the menu. The other settings do not have to be changed. Click the "OK" button. The window will close.

      Open the "Settings" menu at the top of the DVDx window, then click "Output Settings." Another window will open. Select "AVI" from the menu at the top left of this window. Choose "MPEG" from the second drop-down menu from the top. Select "XviD MPEG-4 Codec" from the third drop-down menu from the top and check the "Enable Video" box immediately below this third menu. Click the "Whole" button beside the "Max Frame" option in the Export Settings box. Then click the "Apply" button. This will close the window.

      Select "Destination" from the File menu in the main program window. Browse to the folder where you wish to save the movie and enter the film&'s name in the box beside the "Save" button. Click "Save." This will close the window.

      Click the red "Record" button in the bottom right of the main DVDx window. This will copy the movie from the DVD to the folder on your hard drive you selected.

    Enable Media Streaming

      Install and open Windows Media Player 11. It is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center.

      Add the movie you ripped to your Windows Media Player library. Enable media streaming by selecting "Media Sharing..." from the Library menu, then clicking the "Share My Media" check box in the window that opens.

      Enable media sharing on your PS3. Select "Network Settings" from under the "Settings" tab and select the "Enable Media Server Connection" option. The PS3 should automatically connect to your computer.

    Use Remote Play

      Register your PSP on your PS3. Connect your PSP and PS3 using the USB to Mini USB cable. On your PSP, select "USB Connection" from the "Settings" column. On your PS3, open "Remote Play Settings" from the "Settings" column and select "Register Device." Select your PSP from the list.

      On your PS3, select "Remote Play" from under the "Network" column. This will place it into standby mode.

      Select "Remote Play" from under your PSP&'s "Network" column, then select "Connect via Internet." Select the "Log In" button from the screen that pops up. Your PSP should now display the PS3 system screen.

      Select the "Windows Media Player" icon from the "Video" column to browse to the movie you ripped to your computer. Select the movie you have ripped to begin playback.
