What Is the PSP Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a short distance data transmission protocol that many wireless devices such as headsets and cell phones support. The PSP Go, which was released on October 1, 2009, added Bluetooth support to the PSP's already impressive array of handheld features. With Bluetooth technology, the PSP is opened up to a new set of peripheral inputs as well as having the ability to connect to the Internet without a Wi-Fi connection.
  1. Bluetooth Support

    • The PSP Go model supports Bluetooth connections. It makes use of Bluetooth 3.0, which features data transfer speeds of up to 2.4 Mbit/s. The PSP Go also features several Bluetooth profiles that allow it to connect to certain compatible devices.

    Bluetooth Headset

    • One of the most common Bluetooth peripherals is the Bluetooth headset. Once connected to the PSP, you can voice chat with friends over the PlayStation Network while playing games online. If you already have a Bluetooth headset for your PS3 or cell phone, all you have to do is sync it with your PSP and you can use it. You can also use the headset as headphones to listen to music stored on your PSP.

    Bluetooth Tethering

    • Firmware update 6.10 brings Bluetooth tethering to your PSP. What this means is that you can connect your PSP to your cell phone via the Bluetooth connection and connect to the Internet through your wireless service provider's network. You no longer have to be in range of a Wi-Fi connection to connect to the Internet so you can play online games almost anywhere in the world.

    PS3 Controller

    • Both the Sixaxis and DualShock 3 controllers for the PlayStation 3 use Bluetooth technology. That means you can connect either controller to your PSP to use as an external controller. These controllers are more comfortable than the PSP's gamepad and both feature dual analog sticks. Since the PSP Go can connect to your television, you can use a PS3 controller while playing PSP games on a big screen TV.

    Other Peripherals

    • While a host of other Bluetooth peripherals are out there, such as keyboards and mice, so far the PSP does not support them. However, new Bluetooth profiles may be added to the PSP Go via firmware updates to allow support for more Bluetooth devices.
