What Is the Blue Screen of Death on PSP?

As gaming consoles become more advanced, one of the downsides is an increase in possible issues. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is no exception when it experiences the "blue screen of death." This is an error message that gains its name from a similar message that occurs in Windows operating systems. This error can occur for several different reasons and can normally be fixed by restarting the console. PSP owners who have installed "homebrewed" applications on their console are at a greater risk for the error due to unintended use of the console firmware.
  1. The Blue Screen Message

    • The screen occurs when there is a system error within the PSP. Users will see a bright blue screen with the prompt "Setting Information is corrupted. Press the O button to repair and restore default settings." The message is displayed in several languages.

    Easy Solution

    • Pressing "O" will reset the system and take users through the set-up process users first went through upon initially purchasing the console.

    Console Types

    • The blue screen of death occurs for different reasons, depending on the firmware of the console and whether the PSP in question is running a homebrew program. The latter is often more prone to the error.

    Causes

    • On a PSP with no homebrew, the blue screen of death can occur when ejecting a UMD that is streaming information as well as shutting down the console while a webpage is loading.

    Homebrew PSP

    • Homebrew PSPs can experience the blue screen of death when leaving a game. Also when downgrading firmware on a homebrew system, corrupted flash files will prompt the blue screen.

    Recovery Software

    • If the system continues to display the blue screen, users may have to install recovery software available on the websites of independent PSP software developers.
