What Are the Differences Between Action Replay and GameShark for the PSP?

The Action Replay and GameShark Media Manager for the Sony PlayStation Portable handheld video game system are two cheat device options that you can use to change how you play your games. Datel, the manufacturer of Action Replay, and Mad Catz, the manufacturer of GameShark, give players different methods for cheating. What you want to do in a game determines which cheating device you should use. Both options require a computer to download and use the software, which is then transferred to the PSP via USB connection.
  1. Cheating Mechanism

    • The Action Replay and GameShark for the PSP use two different methods for employing cheats in games. Action Replay uses cheat codes that manipulate a game's code to change the game. The types of cheat codes available for Action Replay include unlimited lives, access to any of the items in-game, and access to later game levels without the need to play the game, among other cheats. Since the Action Replay changes the game code, you may encounter glitches or other problems with the game when using the cheating device. The GameShark gives users the option to load game saves from Mad Catz or other users, and does not involve manipulating the game code. The game saves allow users to start on advanced levels and with items you would normally have to earn when playing the game.

    Installation

    • Both cheating systems require users to install the program on a computer, using the supplied CD-Roms. When using GameShark, you only install the software on your computer. The Action Replay delivers cheats by manipulating game code, and requires a second software installation onto the memory card of the PSP. You need to use a Windows-based computer for both cheating devices, and at least 3MB of free memory to install the Action Replay on a PSP.

    Cheats

    • All available codes are loaded into Action Replay when you install the cheating device on the PSP. You access the codes by navigating to the PSP's memory stick and selecting "Action Replay." You can also turn codes on or off in the middle of game play, by holding the right shoulder button and pressing "Home." Code updates are released on the pspar.com, and are applied to the PSP by downloading the file to the PSP/Common folder on your memory card. GameShark game saves are available on the GameShark website. You need to download the game save you want to use, connect the PSP to your computer and use the GameShark software to transfer the save to the PSP.

    Extras

    • In addition to allowing users to load game saves onto the PSP, the GameShark for the PSP is a full media manager. You can use the software to manage your music, pictures, and videos. In addition, the GameShark can convert videos and import music from your CD collection for playback on the PSP. Action Replay is used exclusively as a cheating device, and does not include extra functionality.
