Firmware Updates
Sony periodically releases new firmware updates for the PSP. These updates add new features to the PSP, fix bugs and update security software to ensure the device remains operational. These updates are also necessary to play newer games that require an updated version of the firmware. You also will be unable to access the PlayStation Store if you do not have the newest version of the PSP firmware.
Update Methods
There are three main ways to update your PSP. The first is to update the device directly through a Wi-Fi connection. Your PSP can download and install the update from any wireless access point. The second method is through a UMD game disc. Games that require a newer version of the firmware include that firmware on the game disc so you can update without a Wi-Fi connection. The final method is transferring from a computer. You can download the update eboot file over your computer's Internet connection, then transfer the file to your PSP using the PSP's USB connection.
Memory Stick Folders
When you format your PSP's memory stick for use with the device, it will create certain files and folders that allow the PSP to store game data to the memory stick. When adding the eboot update, you must place it in a specific folder within the memory card's folder groups. If these folders are not already there, you will need to create them. The eboot file should be added to the "Update" folder within the "Game" folder within the "PSP" folder on the memory stick root.
Enable Update
Once the eboot update has been added to the memory stick, you just need to install it on your PSP. Power on your PSP and scroll to the "Game" tab. Scroll down until you find the firmware update file. Select it and it will begin to install. You must have a fully charged battery and be connected with the power adapter for the update to install.
