Symptoms of a Fully Bricked PSP

Like many electronic devices that can run programs, a Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) can be modified to run applications outside of its intended scope. This process involves changing the existing software on the PSP. This process voids any warranty active on the PSP and is not condoned by Sony. It also poses the risk of "bricking" the PSP and rendering it completely useless.
  1. Bricking

    • The term "bricking" refers to a piece of hardware that has been rendered completely useless. This is typically due to attempts to modify the existing operating system so that it can run programs like emulators and types of media not officially supported. If this process goes badly and the system become inoperative, it is said to be "bricked," as it now has more in common with a brick than with a piece of electronic hardware.

    Lack of Sound

    • The disk drive in the PSP must spin to be able to read the Universal Media Discs (UMDs) that the PSP uses to store games and movies. This spinning makes a slight whirring noise. You should hear this noise as the machine powers up normally. If this sound is not occurring, the PSP drive is not running and will not be able to read UMDs. The system is now potentially bricked. It is unable to perform its main function, and your hardware may have failed.

    Unresponsive

    • If none of the buttons elicits a response, your system is potentially bricked. Try pressing and holding the power button. If there is no response, bricking is possible, but it may simply be out of power. Plug it into its charger and try again. No response indicates a bricked system. Keep pressing the face buttons to try and awaken the system. These actions will have no effect on a bricked system.

    System Errors

    • Bricking can occur when a different operating system is installed onto the PSP over the existing OS. If this installation fails and the original OS is damaged, the system may still power on, but neither OS will load. After attempting, the system will either lock up or present an error. In a bricked system, it will never get past this point.
