What Cords Do You Need to Use PSP on a TV?

The first Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable), the PSP-1001, was unable display video on a television. Sony now provides two cables for the two major types of televisions available to consumers, which can be used to display game video and movies from later models of the PSP. Before you select one, however, there are a few details to consider because they do have limitations.
  1. Types of AV Cables Available for the Sony PSP

    • Sony offers two types of cables: composite, for televisions that have one video input jack and one or two audio jacks; and component, which uses five jacks total. Composite cables are for older standard definition televisions, while component cables are required for use with high-definition televisions.

Which Cables For Which PSP Model?

    • Sony has shipped four major PSP models to the U.S. market: the PSP-1001, 2001, 3001 and PSPGo. The PSP-1001 does not have video-out capability, and cannot use any of the AV cables. The PSP-2001 and 3001 use composite cable model SCPH-98548, and component model SCPH-98550. The PSPGo uses composite cable model SCPH-98562, and component cable model SCPH-98563.

    Limitations of Cables

    • Sony notes two limitations when using these cables: the composite cable can only be used for playing video content, not for displaying game operation on the PSP-2001. The component cable can be used to display gaming, but only if the television supports progressive-scan video.

    Switching to Television Display

    • After connecting the cables to the connector on the bottom of the PSP unit and to the television, press the "Display" button for five seconds or more. The LCD will turn off, and an image should appear on the television. Press the same button again to return the display to the PSP.

    Selecting Progressive Scan Output

    • To turn on or off progressive-scan output, go to the "Settings" menu, select "Connected Display Settings," and "Component/D-Terminal Unit."

    Selecting Video Output Aspect Ratio

    • To select the video output aspect ratio, go to "Settings," then "Connected Display Settings," "TV Type" and select 4:3 or 16:9.
