DIY Arcade Racing Seat

Playing video games for hours on end puts a strain on the body that can result in aches and pains afterwards. A Do-It-Yourself (DIY) portable arcade racing seat will not inhibit getting that high score because it keeps you comfortable while playing. Supplies from a home and garden store will be needed as will supplies from a hardware store and electronics shop and tools from around the home.

  • Portable stereo speakers, battery-powered
  • Bonding glue
  • Newspaper
  • Metal tray
  • Power drill with 1/2 inch bit
  • C clamp
  • Video game console steering wheel controller

Instructions

      Place a plastic tarp on the floor. Press the release tab next to the bottom section of the lawn chair. Extend the leg bottom section of the chair out. Release the tab. Place the lawn chair on the tarp. Press the release tab next to the head top section of the chair. Pull the top section all the way back so it is horizontal. Release the tab.

      Measure 3 inches in from the bottom left end of the head top section of the chair. Make a mark on the tubing with a piece of chalk. Repeat this procedure, only from the top left end of the head top section.

      Hold one of the two stereo powered speakers so the grill is facing your right. Apply bonding glue to the side of the speaker farthest from you. Place the glued side of the speaker against the chalk mark on the tubing closest to you. Hold the speaker against the tube for two minutes before letting go.

      Hold the other stereo powered speaker so the grill is facing to your right. Apply bonding glue to the side of the speaker facing you. Place the glued side of the speaker against the chalk mark on the tubing farthest from you. Hold the speaker against the tube for two minutes before letting go. Let the glue set overnight.

      Open the battery compartment on the back of one of the speakers. Insert batteries and close the battery compartment.

      Place newspaper on a table. Place the metal tray face down on the newspaper. Measure 3 inches in and 2 inches up from the bottom left corner of the tray. Drill a hole through this measurement on the tray with a power drill.

      Hold the C clamp with the attached rod facing down. Apply bonding glue around the hole on the tray. Insert the end of the rod into the tray and hold it there for a minute. Apply bonding glue around the end of the rod where it meets the hole. Let the glue set overnight.

      Turn the tray on its side. Apply bonding glue into the hole so it covers the end of the rod. Let the glue set overnight.

      Rotate the tray counterclockwise to open the jaws of the C clamp. Place the C clamp around the armrest on the side of the chair closest to you. Rotate the tray clockwise to close the jaws of the C clamp around the armrest. Stop rotating the tray when resistance is felt and the tray is perpendicular to the armrests on both sides of the chair.

      Place the chair that is now an arcade racing seat in front of the television attached to the video game console. Place the video game console̵7;s steering wheel controller on the tray. Plug the powered speaker̵7;s audio cord into the audio out of your video game console. Alternately, if you are using a speaker surround system, plug the cord into the amplifier̵7;s surround sound auxiliary output. Sit in the chair with the tray in front of you to play.
