How to Hook an XBox Up to an External Hard Drive to Save Games

In an effort to increase storage space options, Microsoft introduced an update to the Xbox 360 console that added support for USB flash drives and external hard drives. This allows you to save games and other data to a drive that you can take with you anywhere, which is especially handy for users who want to use their profile and saved games on other consoles. Connecting and formatting the external drive for use on your console is quick and straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off your Xbox 360.

    • 2

Unplug the hard drive's power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 3

Connect the USB cord from your external hard drive to any available USB port on your Xbox.

    • 4

Plug the hard drive's power cord into the wall outlet, and turn on your Xbox 360.

    • 5

Go to "My Xbox" on the dashboard. Select "System Settings," and press the "A" button.

    • 6

      Select "Memory," and press "A."

    • 7

Select "USB Storage Device," and then press "A."

    • 8

Select "Configure Now," and then press the "A" button. This loads a confirmation dialog.

    • 9

Select "Yes," and then press "A." The console automatically formats the drive for use. The drive will now be selectable when saving data from your Xbox 360.
