Headset Mic Problems

Whether you are utilizing a voice chat feature for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or a personal computer, headset microphone equipment can suffer from malfunctions and technical issues. Typically, the device is affected by echoes or background noise when speaking, or players will have difficulty hearing each other.
  1. Dirty or Damaged Equipment

    • The headset will sometimes work inconsistently. This is usually because of a damaged wire. Examine the cords for visible defects. If there are tears and scratches, that could be the cause of microphone issues. You can also inspect the connector jacks located on the headset for any dirt or debris. Connector jacks should be cleaned with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to avoid damaging the equipment.

    Noise and Feedback

    • Your headset will sometimes receive feedback in the form of a loud screeching noise whenever you speak into the mic. This is usually caused by loud background noise such as a television or loud music from a stereo. You can often resolve this issue by turning down the TV or even turning down your own microphone.

    Configuration Issues

    • Another problem is when you use your wireless headset either for your Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PC, and the device simply doesn't work. The power light will be on indicating that the device works. However, you cannot hear your friends and they cannot hear you. This is because you just turned on the device but did not properly configure it to your system. You need to consult the instructions for how to wirelessly configure your headset to your console or PC.

    Voice Chat Drops

    • Sometimes, while engaging in voice chat online with your friends, the system keeps dropping you out of the channel. More often than not, this problem is an internal-server lag caused by the website or game server that you are using. There is no problem with the mic and the only solution is to be patient and wait it out or play on a different website or game.

    Very Low Volume

    • Sometimes on the device voices come across very weak and quiet. For PC users, this symptom occurs because your microphone settings have been set to low in your control panel. You will need to open your control panel and click on the "Sound and Audio Devices" icon. Once that has opened, click on the "Voice" tab and reconfigure the volume settings for your microphone.
