How to Separate Your Axis on a Momo Racing Wheel

After wear and tear, you may need to separate the axis and pedals from the Momo racing wheel, and then reset the parts. Loose potentiometers and pedal shafts set the stage for "spiking." When spiking occurs, false pedal readings illustrate a maximum value that is untrue, and the pedal range decreases from 5 to 20 percent. You can reduce slack by removing excess grease on the pedal shafts, cleaning the potentiometers, and checking these parts for smooth range.

Things You'll Need

  • Grease (a brand that is safe to use on plastic parts)
  • Logitech gaming software, version 4.40 or later
  • Windows Vista or Windows 7
  • DirectInput8, or later
  • Screwdriver
  • Non-conductive tape
  • Strong paper towels
  • Electrical contact cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the link "Wingmanteam: ClrClalib Readme Text" provided in the Resource list, download the file, and open it. Read the text it contains.

    • 2

Clear calibration data. Click the "Wingmanteam: Clear Calibration Utility" link provided in the Resource list. Based on your OS, download either the "ClrCalib.exe(32-bit)" or "ClrCalib64.exe (64-bit)." (Note: Scroll down the webpage to see the download.)

    • 3

Run the clear calibration data utility.

    • 4

Remove the USB plug from the wheel and then reconnect it.

    • 5

Unscrew the eight visible screws, and four hidden ones located under the rubber pads, and then remove the pedals.

    • 6

Remove the springs from the pedals.

    • 7

Wipe off the grease from the shafts with a paper towel.

    • 8

Apply one strip of non-conductive tape to the ends of the shafts. If too much tape is applied, the pedals will not be pushed back by the springs.

    • 9

Put the springs back on the pedals.

    • 10

Apply grease to the shafts. The grease you use must be safe to use on plastic parts.

    • 11

Remove grease from potentiometers and then spray the potentiometers with electrical contact cleaner, if dirty.

    • 12

Open DXTweak2 and check the valves in the software while turning the potentiometers manually. The potentiometers should have smooth range.

    • 13

Connect the potentiometers back to the pedals.

    • 14

Place the potentiometers back in the retainers and then place the pedals back in the brackets.

    • 15

Move the pedals with your hand. Check potentiometers again for smooth range using DXTweak2.

    • 16

Put the screws back in the pedals and under the rubber pads. Tighten all screws moderately, but not too tight.

    • 17

Hold the pedals in the palm of your hand and test for full range again.

    • 18

Clear the calibration data by running the "ClrClrCalib.exe(32-bit)" or "ClrCalib64.exe" (64-bit) utility you downloaded earlier.

    • 19

Remove the USB plug from the wheel and then reconnect it.

    • 20

      Verify full range in DXTweak2.
