How to Put a Light Mod on an Xbox

A light mod can be applied to an Xbox to give it a custom look. The Xbox center jewel can be removed and cleaned to make it clear so that a cathode computer fan can rest on the inside of the jewel cutout and emit a bright LED light though the Xbox center jewel. You can apply your own light mod to your Xbox at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Dremel tool

Instructions

    • 1

Use a Torx screwdriver to remove the Torx screws from the Xbox. The screws are located under the rubber foot pads on the bottom of the Xbox console.

    • 2

Take the Xbox back cover off the Xbox.

    • 3

Take the metal shield covering off of the inside of the Xbox cover using a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 4

Pop the Xbox center jewel out using a small utility blade that has been warmed over the stove on medium heat. Be very careful when removing the jewel so that you do not burn yourself. Shimmy the utility knife under the jewel edges, and pop the jewel off of the case.

    • 5

Use a Dremel tool with varying size bits to cut a hole into the center plastic case of the Xbox where the center jewel sat. Be sure to leave a 1/8-inch lip for the jewel to be glued to.

    • 6

Use 150-grit sandpaper to gently scuff the Xbox jewel.

    • 7

Pour a small amount of lacquer thinner onto a cloth. Wear eye protection and be in a well-ventilated area when cleaning the paint off of the Xbox jewel.

    • 8

Allow the lacquer thinner to clean the green paint off of the Xbox jewel by wiping it clean. You can salvage the silver "XBOX" logo paint if you use the lacquer thinner lightly.

    • 9

Take a 80 mm cathode tube off of a cathode computer fan by unscrewing it, and use epoxy glue to glue it around the diameter edge of the center jewel.

    • 10

Plug the 12-volt computer cathode power to the Molex connection port on the DVD ROM.

    • 11

Attach the cathode computer ballast piece using Velcro to attach it to the inside cover of the Xbox, behind the DVD ROM drive.

    • 12

Use a Dremel tool with a small bit to make a small hole for the computer cathode switch to fit through. Cut a small hole the same size in the Xbox cover.

    • 13

Affix the switch into place, and leave the inside metal shield on the cover of the Xbox off.

    • 14

Place the cover back onto the Xbox, and screw the Torx screws back into place.
