Tips for the Xbox

The original Microsoft Xbox marked the company's first serious foray into console-based video gaming. Launched in 2001, the system quickly amassed a large roster of games that cemented its position as a serious rival to Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's GameCube. If you're still using the original Xbox to access the many games that can only be played on the system, a few tips will help you get the most out of your system.
  1. Change Console Name

    • Your Xbox has a name that was given at the time of manufacture. This name is used to identify the console on networked games of "Halo," and within the system menus of earlier model consoles. This name can be changed by posting a top ten score in "Dead or Alive 3" and entering your name on the scoreboard. It can also be changed by creating an Xbox Live profile (access to Xbox Live is not required) on "Return to Castle Wolfenstein," or by creating and saving a profile on "Cel Damage" or "MotoGP."

    Reset Parental Code

    • If you've picked up an Xbox console second-hand and are having trouble accessing some of the videos or graphic effects on M-rated games, the console may have had its parental lock activated. This feature allows parents to control how graphic the system's game content can become. To reset this feature, unlocking all mature content for Xbox games, navigate to the "System" menu of the console's user interface. Highlight "Parental Control" and press "X," then "Y," then "L" and finally "X" on your controller.

    Force Progressive Scan Mode

    • Progressive scan mode is a higher quality graphical resolution that was not widespread on televisions at the time the Xbox was manufactured. For this reason, it is not the default for the system menus. However if you are playing your Xbox through a flat-screen or HDTV, your television is almost certainly compatible with this graphical mode. View the Xbox system menu and music visualization in high-quality progressive scan mode by turning the system on with no game inserted. Hold the left and right trigger buttons of the console's controller and click both the thumb-sticks down simultaneously.

    System Care

    • The Xbox is an older system and has been discontinued by its manufacturers, so it's important to maintain your console to ensure it continues to run efficiently. You can prolong the health of your system by keeping it in a cool, dry place free from dust or direct sunlight. Don't place the machine directly on a carpeted floor, and ensure the fan intake at the console's rear is in a well-ventilated spot where clean air can freely flow in and out of the console. You may also wish to run a DVD lens cleaning disc in the system every few months. Simply insert the disc and play as you would a regular DVD. Don't use a CD cleaning disc, though: these contain harsh brushes that can damage the console's sensitive lens.
