How to Cool an Xbox 360

If your Xbox 360 begins to overheat, you could be moments away from a much more serious problem. The game you're playing may freeze or lock up, and the entire system could experience permanent damage. If you are trying to cool down your Xbox 360, you can do so using a few different tricks. Some solutions are temporary, while others will help to prevent further issues down the road.

Remove any game disc from the tray on your Xbox 360 and turn off the unit. Allow it to sit unused for a period of 30 minutes to one hour. This will allow the Xbox 360 to naturally cool off to the point where it can be turned on again. Place your hand on the rear of the console -- if you still feel excess heat even while the console is off, allow it to sit unused for a longer period of time.

Spray compressed air into all the air vents around the Xbox 360 console. Open the disc tray and spray compressed air directly into the inside of the console via the opened tray. This will help get all the dust and dirt built up inside off of the components inside the console, which will not only help cool it down but will help keep it from overheating in the future.

Move your Xbox 360 away from the wall, the sides of a shelf or any other pieces of equipment in your entertainment setup. Make sure at least four inches exist between the sides of the console and any other device. If your Xbox 360 is too close to the wall, excess heat can get trapped between the two objects, causing the 360 to overheat. Additionally, do not place anything on your Xbox 360 (such as another electronic component) while it is running.
