Character Types in Dragon Age: Origins

"Dragon Age: Origins" is a BioWare game released in 2009 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The role-playing game allows you to choose your character's origins, from three different races and three different classes. Based on these combinations, there are six different opening acts to the game; Human Noble, Magi, City Elf, Dalish Elf, Dwarf Commoner and Dwarf Noble. You can customize your character's appearance, name and even his voice.
  1. Human Noble

    • Both human warriors and rogues belong to the noble house of Cousland. This house is one of the most powerful in Ferelden, dating to a time before Ferelden's first king. Unlike privileged families that are instated by divine right, the Cousland family has earned its place. It has a reputation for being fair, honest and fearless in leading great armies into battle. The Couslands feel it is their duty to send an army to the aid of King Cailan to defend the south from the darkspawn. Your character would be the young scion, sent to fulfill the family duties or decide your own path.

    Magi

    • In times past, Mages ruled the world, using their abilities to destroy enemies and reign supreme. They were overthrown, and at present are protected by the Circle of Magi. It dually protects the magi from the world, and the world from the Magi. The Chantry is run by priests and mage-hunting templars, capable of destroying a mage. Demons from the "Fade" will try to take over magi, either enticing them with tricks and forbidden blood magic, or taking them by force. All apprentices must pass a final test, or Harrowing, where they defeat a demon or are destroyed by the templars. Your character begins at the end of his time in the Chantry, just before his Harrowing.

    City Elf

    • The city elves represent the poorest of classes. They are made to live outside the city walls and permitted in only to work during daylight hours. At nightfall, the elves make their way back to the alienage; any caught dallying in the city are taken for thieves. Many of them truly are pickpockets. At the heart of the city grows a great tree that the elves call Vhenadahl, meaning "Tree of the People." At one time, the elves lived happily in their own lands, but all was taken from them by the humans. A day may arrive that the elves will fight for what is theirs.

    Dwarf Noble

    • Dwarves work and believe in the stone. It is what provides the structure of their homes as well as the ground underfoot. They believe that when you die, you become the stone, reinforcing it and making it stronger with your own strength. The weak and criminal do not strengthen, but rather weaken the foundation. Dwarves strive to prove themselves, but often resort to treachery and intrigue, provided they still appear to have honor. With an aging king, House Aeducan's children know it is their time to prove their worth.

    Dwarf Commoner

    • Not all dwarves are nobles. There are those that are casteless and live below the surface. The Dusttown dwarves are looked down upon by humans and surface dwarves alike. They are branded with tattoos to easily identify their lack of caste. Some are criminals, but not all. Some beg, some hunt and others work, doing what they can to survive. The way they can figure it, once every other race falls to the Darkspawn, they will carry on because survival is the only thing they know.

    Daelish Elf

    • The immortal Daelish elves once ruled Thedas alone, until the arrival of the human race. With their enslavement they lost not only their freedom, but their immortality and identity. Now, the Daelish refuse to live among humans, opting instead to live in clans in outlying areas. They wish to reclaim their lost tongue, magics and arts, praying that the elven gods will return and lead them to a new homeland. They will teach the elves that have forgotten, and continue to hope.
