Game Hints for Gears of War

"Gears of War" is a third-person shooter released in 2006 for the Xbox 360. The game puts players in the boots of Marcus Fenix as he battles a fierce group of aliens called the Locust. The game has a cover system that allows you to utilize many aspects of the environment, such as low walls, collapsed pillars and corners, to provide cover from incoming fire. This is an important aspect you need to master.
  1. Stay in Cover

    • Staying safe from enemy fire is half the battle in "Gears of War." Adjust yourself to the cover system and use it whenever you can. Note where enemies are and always try to keep your piece of cover between you and them. Prioritize any Locust that move around to your sides and shoot them before you become vulnerable. Move to the edge of your cover and push the control stick in the direction of the open space. If there is any cover nearby, a diagram and button prompt will appear, indicating that you can move to another piece of cover instantly.

    Flank Enemies

    • The rules of cover apply to your enemies just as much as they do to you. Try to maneuver around to their side so that they are more exposed to your gunfire. Moving between bits of cover will keep you not only safe, but also unseen, allowing you to sneak up on enemies. Moving yourself to the enemy location cuts off an escape route, pinning down the group you are attacking. It also means that you will start to divide their fire between two locations, making life a bit easier for your allies.

    Blind Fire

    • Pressing the primary fire button without aiming while in cover lets you shoot over or around cover blindly. Your accuracy will be drastically reduced -- especially over longer ranges -- but it will suppress the enemy and cut off a forward advance. Blind fire with a boomshot when an enemy is almost on top of you, and it will severely injure or even kill him. Throwing grenades blindly is a lot quicker than aiming them and can still cause lots of damage if you angle them properly.

    Emergence Holes

    • It is important to close emergence holes as soon as they open. They will continuously spawn enemies for a preset amount of time if you leave them unseen to. The constant flow of enemies will use extra ammunition and risk overwhelming you. When you see a hole open, often indicated as a point of interest, quickly equip a frag grenade and aim so that it lands in or close to the emergence hole. If you perform this maneuver successfully, the hole will collapse when the grenade detonates, and additional enemies will not appear. This is the most useful application for grenades, especially on harder difficulties.
