How to Properly Set Up Your Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor

The Kinect is a new technology that allows your Xbox 360 game console to "see" you and recognize your movements for game play. The Kinect itself is a motion sensor bar that hooks up to your Xbox 360 game console and has a camera that allows it to detect your movements. When hooked up properly, the Kinect can perform at its best and provide more accurate detection for games.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the Kinect sensor bar in an area that works best for your living space. Make sure it is on a flat surface, somewhere between 2 and 6 feet from the floor and not within sunlight or a foot from audio speakers. The most ideal location for the Kinect sensor is either above or below your television.

Ensure you have the proper amount of space in your play area. Ensure that your play area is at least 6 feet wide but not longer than 12 feet. Make sure the area is well-lit and that others who are watching you play are not within range, or the Kinect sensor may pick them up, which can interfere with game play detection.

Connect the cables of the Kinect to your Xbox 360 game console. If connecting to an original Xbox 360 game console, plug one end of the Kinect cable into the back USB port and the other into an electrical outlet. If you are connecting the Kinect to an Xbox 360 S game console, plug the cable into the AUX port behind the console. When using the Xbox 360 S game console, you will not need to utilize the power supply.

Insert a Kinect-enabled game CD into the CD drive, and your system will encourage you to download a software update for your Kinect. Agree to the update.

Follow the onscreen step-by-step instructions on setting up your Kinect sensor for it to properly detect you for game play.
