How to Stop the Xbox Ring of Death

With over 50 million units sold, the Xbox 360 has been a triumphant success for Microsoft, helping to build on the foundation set by the original Xbox. But the console has not been without its problems, either, and foremost of these is the error known as the "red ring of death." Flashing red lights instead of the regular green have, for many owners, meant shipping their systems off for repair or replacing them. But with a few simple tips, Xbox 360 owners may be able to prevent the error altogether, and enjoy their consoles for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your console in an open, well-vented space. Overheating may be one explanation for red ring errors. If using your Xbox 360 in a gaming cabinet, keep the doors open while the console is turned on, and keep the area around the system free of clutter.

    • 2

Check your Xbox 360 periodically by simply touching the case, particularly during long gaming or movie-watching sessions. If the console seems hot, turn it off for a few hours.

    • 3

Check all connections periodically. Test all power cables, as well as the wall outlet. Some red ring errors come from the system not getting the required amount of power.
