Xbox Compatible Headsets

A headset is a common accessory for an Xbox. Since some games require speaking and listening, many headsets have built-in speakers. Clarity and noise-canceling are important features in Xbox headsets. A normal headset won't work with an Xbox, because it has a mini-port, suitable for cell phone headset jacks. Wired headsets plug directly into the Xbox controller.
  1. Cell Phone Headsets

    • Cell phone headsets should work with the Xbox headset port. The adapter is smaller than the common 2.5mm jack used in most audio devices, allowing it to plug into the Xbox. Since cell phone headsets have microphones built in, you'll be able to communicate and listen to other players. The downside of cell headsets is that many of them don't cancel noise or transmit your voice as clearly as higher-standard gaming-specific headsets.

    Wired Gaming Headsets

    • Wired gaming headsets are designed to transmit sound clearly from games. Not every wired gaming headset will have a microphone built in, so players wishing to speak to other players should shop for a microphone-enabled set. Wired gaming headsets are generally heavier than their wireless counterparts, but their increased cushioning allows for hours of comfortable game time. You can choose high-end models that can reproduce Dolby 5.1 audio, or something cheaper with a standard audio playback. Wired gaming headsets will always indicate on their package whether they are Xbox compatible.

    Wireless Gaming Headsets

    • Wireless gaming headsets are small and lightweight and can connect to your Xbox without the mess of cords. Not all wireless gaming headsets have a microphone built in. The Pioneer Wireless Headphones Model SE-DIR800C, for example, can deliver Dolby sound, but doesn't include a microphone and costs more than $200. The Microsoft version of an Xbox wireless headset, on the other hand, may have less sound purity, but costs only $50 and includes a microphone.
