How to Modify an XBox 360 Controller for Rapid Firing

Xbox 360 owners have the option of playing multiplayer “death” matches or to co-op certain games with a paid subscription to Xbox Live. Many hardcore gamers choose to modify their game controllers for these games, such as outfitting them with rapid-fire buttons. These changes allow certain in-game weapons that normally fire one shot at a time, like a sniper rifle, operate as if they were automatic weapons. The mod requires physically altering your controller, a task that will void any current warranty your system has.

Things You'll Need

  • T9 Torx screwdriver
  • Plastic push button
  • Wiring
  • Soldering iron (needle tipped recommended)
  • Electric drill
  • Push button mechanism
  • Wire crimper
  • Adhesive gel
  • Tape (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Click and remove the back battery compartment and set it aside. Unscrew all seven screws on the rear of the controller and set the screws aside. Pry the controller casing apart, keeping the controller face down to keep the four colored option buttons in place.

    • 2

Remove the colored buttons or place a piece of tape over the buttons to keep them from falling out while working. Select a point on the top face of the controller where you’d like your rapid fire button to be installed. A common choice among many gamers is slightly to the left of the blue X button.

    • 3

Drill a hole completely through the plastic shell at the spot you want to place the button. Set aside. Dab a small amount of glue to the top of the push mechanism, then press on the plastic button. Thread the mechanism through the hole you just drilled.

    • 4

Crimp the ends of about piece of wiring about 2 inches long. Wrap one end of the exposed wire around the small prongs on the end of the button mechanism. Locate the small grayish dot at the top center, between the two black circles where the thumbsticks normally rest.

    • 5

Heat your soldering iron. Heat the gun over a damp cloth to prevent any accidental burns to your work surface.

    • 6

Solder the end of the wire to the small dot and allow ample time for the solder to cool (about 30 minutes). Replace the colored buttons back into the controller face or remove the tape that held them in place. Attach the back of the controller to the front (again, with the front face down) and re-screw all seven screws back into place. Attach the battery compartment.
