How to Transfer Roster Updates to a Xbox 360 Using a USB Hard Drive

The Xbox 360 Spring 2010 console dashboard update enables 360 owners to utilize standard USB flash drives for memory. Games saves, roster updates, map packs, player profiles, videos, arcade titles, themes and other content can all be copied to a compatible USB flash drive for transfer to another Xbox 360 console. Replacing the original 360 memory unit, the update makes it possible for any brand of USB drive that is formatted with the Windows FAT32 file system format, to be used. Flash drives utilized for Xbox 360 memory transfer purposes must have at least 1 GB of storage space, and can be formatted for a maximum of 16 GB of space.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the Internet-connected Xbox 360 console. If the console has not already received the Spring 2010 update, the system will do so now.

    • 2

Insert the flash drive into one of the two USB ports on the front of the Xbox 360 console.

    • 3

Select "System Settings" from the "My Xbox" group of options on the console dashboard.

    • 4

Select "Memory" from the system settings listed. At the next screen, select "USB Storage Device."

    • 5

Choose how you want the drive to be formatted by selecting either "Configure Now" or "Customize." Selecting "Configure Now" will automatically format the drive for use with the 360, erasing all data on the drive. Choosing "Customize" will allow you to determine how much memory will be reserved for Xbox use, up to 16 GB total. Confirm your decision, and the console will format the drive. Following the configuration process, the console will test the device to make sure it was successfully formatted. If the device passes, it is ready to transfer content.

    • 6

From the "System Settings" menu, select "Memory" again. Choose the memory device that contains the content you wish to transfer, such as the main system hard drive.

    • 7

Select the type of content you wish to copy and transfer from the list of options. For game content such as roster updates, select "Games" from the list.

    • 8

Select the item you wish to copy to the USB drive for transfer. Game content is located under the name of the game itself.

    • 9

Choose "Copy" or "Move" for the content you wish to transfer. The console will ask you which drive you wish to copy or move the content onto. Select the USB drive formatted earlier. The content will be transferred onto the USB drive. The drive can now be inserted into another console, and the process repeated, to move the content off the drive for use on the other Xbox 360.
