How to Connect to Xbox Live Through a DSL Modem

Xbox Live is a fee-based online gaming service for the Xbox 360 console. In order to connect an Xbox 360 to Xbox Live, you must have a high-speed Internet service, such as cable or DSL. After that, you must choose one of a few methods for connecting the console to the Internet. One of those methods involves connecting the console directly to a cable or DSL modem.

Instructions

    • 1

Configure your DSL modem using your computer. This step varies from provider to provider, so consult your modem's user manual or call customer service for specific instructions.

    • 2

Turn off both the console and the DSL modem. Flip the power switch on the modem. If it does not have a power switch, unplug it from the wall outlet.

    • 3

Unplug your computer from your DSL modem. Only one device can be connected to a modem at a time, and you will be connecting your Xbox 360 to the modem.

    • 4

Plug your Xbox 360 into the DSL modem using an Ethernet cable. The DSL modem will only have one Ethernet port, resembling a large phone jack. The Xbox 360's Ethernet port is located next to the audio/video ports on the back of the console.

    • 5

Turn the DSL modem back by either flipping on the power switch or plugging the device back into the wall. Wait until it is fully powered and connected to the Internet.

    • 6

Turn on the Xbox 360 console.

    • 7

Connect to Xbox Live by navigating to "System Settings" from the console's dashboard. Choose "Network Settings" and "Configure Network." Choose "Test Xbox Live Connection." The Xbox 360 will connect to Xbox Live.
