How to Fix E64 on the XBox 360

Owners of Microsoft's Xbox 360 console delight in the system's stunning graphics engine, extensive game library, exclusive downloadable Xbox Live content and online game play. However, the console isn't without its downside, as many of those same owners often lament what's become known as the Red Rings of Death: when any (or all) of the four usually green-lit quadrants on the system's face turn red accompanied by an on-screen message saying "Error 64."

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure all plugs are secure when powering up your 360 unit. Insert a copied DVD or browse your online downloaded content for the movie or video that resulted in the Error 64 message. The message means something is blocking the Xbox from recognizing the inserted DVD, downloaded content or video from a remote device, such as a laptop or PC.

Look below the Error 64 message on your TV screen. You should see a number code divided into three segments: the first combination will read "64," the middle contains info not pertinent to the problem, and the last eight numbers should read "C00D28A1." These numbers mean the content in question is encrypted to play strictly on another device. For example, Playstation game discs aren't licensed to be played on a 360 and the Error 64 code will result.

Try to play another movie or video to see if you receive another message numbered in the 60s. Not getting the message will ensure nothing is wrong with the device or console. For instance, error messages numbered in the high 60s mean the codec is unsupported or there's a corrupt file on the device. If only Error 64 is displayed, no further action can be taken and contacting Xbox Support isn't warranted.
