Xbox 360 Wireless Remote Troubleshooting

The wireless remote for the Xbox 360 is predominately used for controlling DVD or downloaded video playback. There are a number of issues that can compromise the ability of the remote to function. These issues can make it difficult for the Xbox 360 to detect the signal from the remote or render it completely inoperable. The best method of troubleshooting is to eliminate the potential issues for the remote at the source.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace the two AA batteries in the wireless remote with fresh ones. The batteries do not need to be completely dead to cause issues with the performance of the remote.

    • 2

Remove the faceplate from the Xbox 360 if you have one installed. Some faceplates have metallic paint that can interfere with the signal from the remote.

    • 3

Remove any obstructions from in front of the infrared ports on the wireless remote and the Xbox 360 console. The infrared port on the console is the dark oval next to the memory card slot.

    • 4

Move the remote within ten feet of the console. This is approximately the actual range of the remote. Using the remote from further away can lead to haphazard results.

    • 5

Point the remote directly at the infrared port on the Xbox 360 console.

    • 6

Close the drapes and blinds in the room. In some cases the ambient sunlight can interfere with the wireless remote. Any issues with the Xbox 360 remote that are not resolved at this point are likely due to either the remote or console being damaged.
