How to Solve the Butcher Mystery in Skyrim on the Xbox

When you arrive in Windhelm in "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim," you learn that a serial killer is on the loose. The guards don't have any leads, so they request your help. You're asked to follow the clues, speak with witnesses and determine a motive for the crimes. Several townspeople may seem suspicious to you, but only one is the real killer. You'll need to find plenty of evidence to accuse the guilty party of the deed.

Instructions

- 1
  Enter the graveyard in Windhelm between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. A guard will stop you and tell you someone has been murdered. Offer to help his investigation to start the "Blood on the Ice" quest.

  Enter the Palace of Kings in Windhelm and ask the Jarl's assistant for permission to assist with the investigation. The assistant will agree to your request, so go back outside and notify the guard.

  Speak with the witnesses surrounding the body in the graveyard. None of them have helpful information. Return to the guard and ask for his advice. The guard will direct you to the priestess of Arkay, Helgird.

  Follow the map marker to the Hall of the Dead. Inside, talk to Helgird. She tells you that the victim's body was apparently cut by some sort of embalming tool. Go back outside.

  Examine the murder scene again to find a trail of blood. Follow the blood to an abandoned house. Pick the lock to get inside, or ask the guard for help. He'll tell you to talk with Tova Shatter-Shield, the home's former owner. Find Tova at Candlehearth Hall or the marketplace. Talk to her to get the key.

  Enter the home and follow the blood trail to a chest. Open the chest to find several pamphlets titled "Beware the Butcher!" as well as the butcher's journal. Go to the west wall and push the wardrobe out of the way to reveal the murderer's hideout.

  Get the butcher's second journal from the altar. Exit the hideout and pick up the amulet from the shelf between the two wardrobes. Leave the house.

  Talk to any guard about the amulet and he'll point you to Calixto's House of Curiosities. Also ask about the pamphlets and he will recommend you talk with a woman named Viola.

  Go to the House of Curiosities and accept Calixto's offer to buy the amulet for 500 gold. He mentions that court mages usually carry this type of amulet.

  Find Viola in the streets or inside Candlehearth Hall. Talk to her about the pamphlets. She tells you that she thinks Wuunferth, the court mage, is killing people for his necromancy experiments.

  Talk to Wuunferth in the Palace of Kings to hear his story. He tells you that he has been studying the recent murders as well. He believes that the killer plans to strike again, so head back outside and go to the market district.

  Wait until 5 p.m. The killer arrives and murders another person. Chase the murderer to the abandoned house and kill him, then loot his corpse.

  Return to Jorleif, the head guard, and tell him what happened to complete the quest.
