How to Create a Second Gamertag for XBox

While you can have multiple profiles on your Xbox, it is also possible to create a second gamertag, which is the username by which you will be known on Xbox Live. For all intents and purposes it will look the same as a profile but the advantage is that you can play online with it (if you have a Gold subscription) with the knowledge that it is unique. A profile created on the console might require a name change before you are allowed to play online as when you first create the profile it is not checked against other global gamertags.

  Navigate to the Xbox website and click the green "Join Xbox Live" link at the bottom of the page.

  Enter a valid email address and click "Next." This email address must be different from the one used for your primary gamertag. If you do not have a second email address you can create one using one of the free services like Gmail.

  Enter all your information in the relevant fields and then click "I accept." Your account will be created and a name automatically assigned to your gamertag. Make a note of the email address as well as the password you choose as you will need this information for recovering this gamertag to your Xbox.

  Click the " You can change your gamertag once for free" link on the left of the page and then enter the name for your second gamertag. Click "Check availability" and then "Claim it!" Click "Done" and then enter information like your motto and bio on the next page before clicking "Save."

  Click the "Edit your avatar" link if you want to further customize your gamertag. Once you are pleased with your second gamertag, switch on your Xbox 360 and press the "Guide" button on the gamepad once the dashboard has loaded.

  Scroll down to "Recover Gamertag" and press the "A" button. Press "A" again on the next screen and then select "Yes" when asked if it is OK to log you out from your current session.

  Enter the email address associated with your second gamertag and the password for the tag which you specified when you created it. The gamertag will be retrieved and listed along with the other profiles on your Xbox.
