How to Get a Gamertag on the Original Xbox

Xbox Live is the online application that allows Xbox users to meet-up and play with others under their own moniker -- known as their gamertag. The first version of Xbox Live that supported the original Xbox systems has been discontinued and replaced in recent years by Xbox 360 Live. Until recently, a user's gamertag from the original Xbox live remained unavailable. According to the Major Nelson blog written by Xbox Live's Programming Director Larry Hryb, "...we have begun the process of making previously used and unavailable Xbox LIVE Gamertags available," as of March 2011.

     Turn on your Xbox. Wait for the Xbox logo to appear on your screen.

     Sign-in to Xbox Live. Input your current account information -- including the password -- if prompted.

     Go to the My Xbox Channel. Choose "Change Gamertag."

     Type your original Xbox Live account gamertag into the field. Hit "Enter" when done.

     Wait for the system to check the availability of your name. If the name has not been cleared yet -- or has been taken by another user -- you will have to choose something different.
