How to Troubleshoot XLink

Imagine playing online games on your Mac or PC in one global community of XBox, PlayStation 2 (PS2), GameCube and PSP users -- all free of charge. XLink appeared on the scene in March 2003. The program allowed you to play XBox online, although there were problems using XLink with wireless networks. XLink Kai appeared later in 2003, a revised XLink program with added support for PS2, Gamecube and PSP. XLink Kai allows you to play multiplayer games over the Web on a local area network (LAN). If you have problems using XLink Kai, troubleshooting will help you save time, so you can quickly get back into the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a wireless network card that can perform in promiscuous mode if you can reach your network but don't see any games. Promiscuous mode means a network device can intercept every network packet to monitor network activity. Other network cards would be incompatible with XLink Kai.

    • 2

Untick the "Port Address Translation (PAT)" in the XLink Kai Configuration Tool, which may be turned on, and restart XLink Kai if you cannot see any games, although you configured your console successfully and can reach your network.

    • 3

Reduce your software firewall protection intensity from high to medium, according to the instructions in your manufacturer documentation, if you can see the Kai games but cannot join them. Examples of software firewalls you may have include Norton Internet Security and ZoneAlarm.

    • 4

Uninstall your software firewall protection, according to the instructions in your manufacturer documentation, if you can see the Kai games but get disconnected when you join them or if you cannot join them at all. This means your software firewall is blocking console traffic.

    • 5

Make certain you actively search for games if you get a "configuration failed" error in Diagnostics Mode while using XBox. Kai can only detect your console successfully if you actively search for games.

    • 6

Use the console Mac address for the gaming adapter/bridge Mac address if you cannot get your console detected. The wireless gaming adapter/bridge device allows you to turn a video game console, such as XBox, into a wireless game console if you have a wireless or Wi-Fi network. This gaming adapter/bridge device connects to the Ethernet or local area network port on the XBox or PS2 console to convert the wired Ethernet into wireless Ethernet and has its own Mac address or location. Locate your console Mac address on the bottom of the console or on the control panel of your router. If you use XBox, locate the Mac address by going to "Settings," then "Network Settings," and looking in the Microsoft dashboard.
