How to Make an Xbox Gamertag

While single player games can be played using a standard Xbox profile, you must create a gamertag to participate in online games and leaderboards. A gamertag is a uniquely created nickname for identifying participants on the Xbox Live service. Gamertags are linked through an email address via the Windows Live ID service. Create an Xbox gamertag directly from your console.

Instructions

  Turn on your Xbox and sign in to your profile.

  Press the ̶0;Guide̶1; button. Select ̶0;Join Xbox Live̶1; and press ̶0;A.̶1; A new window appears with information about Xbox Live.

  Press the ̶0;A̶1; button to continue and then select ̶0;Yes̶1; in the Exit Session dialog box. The Welcome to Xbox Live window appears.

  Press the ̶0;A̶1; button to continue. The Enter your First Name window appears. Enter your name in the field and press ̶0;Start.̶1; A window appears asking for your email address.

  Enter your email address in the field, then press ̶0;Start." The next window asks you to choose a password. Enter your password and press ̶0;Start." Confirm your password by entering it again in the next screen.

  Select a question from the Secret Question list, then press ̶0;A.̶1; Provide an answer for the question in the field and press ̶0;Start." The next screen asks for your date of birth.

  Enter your birth date, select ̶0;Done̶1; and press ̶0;A.̶1; This takes you to the Confirm your Information screen. Review the information for accuracy and press ̶0;A̶1; to continue. Press "A" to continue when a screen appears providing you an overview of your current privacy settings. The next window shows the Terms and Preferences agreement. Select ̶0;Accept̶1; and press ̶0;A.̶1;

  Select ̶0;Continue̶1; and press the ̶0;A̶1; button on the Congratulations screen. The next screen gives you the option to upgrade your account to Gold membership. Gold membership is required to use many Xbox Live services, including playing games online. Press ̶0;A̶1; to continue and see a list of membership options. If you do not want to purchase Xbox Live right now, select ̶0;Upgrade Later̶1; and press ̶0;A.̶1; After you have finished purchasing Gold or selecting ̶0;Upgrade Later̶1; you are taken back to the Xbox 360 Dashboard.

  Press the ̶0;Guide̶1; button. Go to the ̶0;Settings̶1; tab, select ̶0;Profile̶1; and press the ̶0;A̶1; button. Select ̶0;Edit Profile̶1; in the Profile window and press ̶0;A.̶1;

  Select ̶0;Gamertag̶1; in the Edit Profile window and press ̶0;A̶1; to continue. The Change Gamertag window appears. By default, when you created your Xbox Live account, the service automatically generated a gamertag. However, you are allowed to change the name of your gamertag once for free.

  Select ̶0;Enter New Gamertag̶1; and press ̶0;A.̶1; Alternatively, select ̶0;Get Suggestions̶1; to review a list of suggestions.

  Enter your desired gamertag in the Change Gamertag window and press ̶0;Start̶1; to submit it. A confirmation window apears. Select ̶0;Yes, use this Gamertag̶1; and press ̶0;A" to save your new gamertag and return to the Xbox 36 dashboard. If the gamertag you chose is taken, select ̶0;Try another Gamertag̶1; and press ̶0;A.̶1; Enter another gamertag and try submitting it again.
