Xbox Live is the official matchmaking and content distribution service for the Xbox 360. When signing up for Xbox Live, you are prompted to create a Gamertag. A Gamertag is the name associated with your Xbox Live account and acts as your permanent ID. The easiest way to check the availability of a Gamertag is to use any of the free websites that scour the Xbox Live Gamertag database.

Open a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Navigate to a Gamertag-checking website such as gamertagsearch.com, xboxgamertag.com or checkgamertag.com.

Type the name of the Gamertag you want to check and press the "Enter" key. After a few seconds, the availability of the Gamertag will be displayed onscreen.
