How to Install a Bow on a Pocket Watch

Pocket watches were a standard time-keeping device for men and women before the advent of the wrist watch. In modern times, pocket watches are sought by antique collectors or anyone that enjoys the classic look pocket watches deliver. The bow of the pocket watch is a decorative and functional ring or hook that allows the watch to attach to a chain intended to help protect the watch from drops and loss. Installing a new bow on your pocket watch is straightforward with two basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a small towel on a flat surface where you work. This helps cushion the fall of the watch should it slip and prevents any pieces from dropping and rolling away.

    • 2

Insert the bow openers into the space inside the bow and squeeze the handles. Line up the edges of the bow with the notches on the pliers jaw. The bow falls off the pocket watch hinge when it opens enough.

    • 3

Place the watch on the towel and then position the new bow over the bow hinges. The new bow has an opening wider than the width of the watch hinges and is not yet connected to the watch.

    • 4

Squeeze the sides of the bow with the bow closing pliers. Apply pressure until the bow ends insert into the pocket watch hinges and resist further movement.

    • 5

Grab the bow with your fingers to ensure that it is attached to the watch. Hold the pocket watch still and tug on the bow sharply to ensure that it does not move.
