History
The Mosler Safe Co. began in 1867 and was a premier creator and developer of safe and safety deposit lock technology. Its safes and locks were used throughout the world. A Mosler safe was installed in a Hiroshima bank prior to World War II and survived the nuclear bomb attack. The company was based in Ohio until its bankruptcy in 2001.
Safety Deposit Box Keys
Mosler safety deposit boxes are still used today in many banks because of their longevity. They are still in working order after possibly decades of use. Each box has a key made to fit that specific lock. This is a Mosler key. The key looks no different than a standard safety deposit box key other than it was made by Mosler Safe Co.
Mosler Safe Keys
Some early models of Mosler safes used a special type of key to change the combination. Many safes came with a combination from the factory, but some more elite models had changeable combinations. The key fit into a special slot in the safe and could turn the lock tumblers to create a unique combination. This allowed for greater security.
Replacement
Since the demise of the Mosler Safe Co., replacement of the keys has become a problem for many users, especially those with older safes or lock boxes. Some locksmiths are able to provide or create replacements. People who purchase a safe that uses a Mosler key to change the combination can have an especially difficult time resetting the lock. If the new owner does not know the original combination, the key is useless, because the safe must be in the open position for the key to work.
