Underwood 18 Typewriter Instructions

A manual typewriter is a great item to own. The Underwood 18 is an old model typewriter that was designed to be portable. It is lightweight and can be easily carried and used anywhere. A manual typewriter, have the advantage of requiring no electricity yet do though require more manual dexterity than a computer keyboard. The Underwood Company adopted the QWERTY keyboard design for its typewriters, making the typewriters easy to adapt to for anyone who is familiar with more modern typewriters or computer keyboards.

Instructions

    • 1

      Pull the paper release lever on the right side forward. Insert a piece of paper into the roller as far as it will go.

      Push the paper release lever back into position and turning the knob of the paper roller away from you, roll the paper forward until it reaches the desired position. If paper requires adjusting, pull the paper release forward and manually adjust paper until is straight and parallel to the top of the roller.

      Set the margins by pushing the marginal stops on the left and right sides to the desired position (1.5 inches is the recommended setting for business letters).

      Place hands over the middle row of the keys. Begin typing by pressing the keys one at a time, slowly and deliberately, exerting enough force to type the letters clearly onto the paper. Use the spacing bar at the bottom of the typewriter to create spaces between letters and words.

      When you reach the end of the row, or hear the "ding" indicating that you have reached the margin,

      use the carriage return lever on the left hand side, pushing it back, to bring you back to the beginning of the page and onto the next row.

      Continue typing until you reach the end of the paper, and either pull the paper release forward or turn the roller away from you and pull out the piece of paper.
