How to Store Old Letters

A hand-written letter is something to cherish and keep for future generations to read. Letters are commonly preserved when they're from loved ones in the military, as this is often a life-changing experience and the letters can be insightful, romantic and even educational. By saving them, you can relive the experience and share it with others. There are many things that can damage a letter, including improper storage and handling.

Instructions

    • 1

Unfold the letter and remove anything attached to it, such as a paperclip, post-it note or staple. In time, these materials will damage the letter and cause discoloration or fading.

    • 2

Place the letter in a polypropylene sleeve, which is available at most department, craft or collectable stores.

    • 3

Place the polypropylene sleeves in a storage box or 3-ring binder. Store the letters in an area that is roughly 70 degrees Fahrenheit with 40 percent humidity. This climate will keep the letters from becoming too dry, and potentially falling apart, or developing mold.
