Things You'll Need
Instructions
Bring a notebook and internet-enabled smartphone with you to the auction. In the notebook you will log information about the items you want, such as price, condition and miscellaneous information about the antique. A smartphone is not required but can provide you with quick internet access to research an item at the last second.
Use every advantage you can prior to bidding on the item. Research the item prior to the auction if possible, or do a quick Google search for the item. Look for similar items and their respective values.
Make as accurate an assessment of the item's value and its condition as possible in the time leading up to the first bid. Determine what your bidding ceiling is for the item, or the maximum amount you are willing to bid.
Make your bids firmly, and make eye contact with the auctioneer while bidding to ensure your bid has been logged. Assess any competition you have in the room for the item. An overly aggressive buyer can push the price of an antique up significantly, which could force you to either raise your bid ceiling or drop out of contention for the item altogether. Stick to your bid limit in these situations and avoid letting another bidder's hubris affect your bidding style.
