Instructions for a Royal Signet 20 Typewriter

The first Royal Signet typewriter made its appearance in 1932, but the model was discontinued in 1933. However, an electric version of the typewriter made a comeback under the same name in the 1970s and 1980s. As of 2011, typewriters are mostly a collectors item, but an enthusiast can still install a ribbon on a Royal Signet 20 and start typing away.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch typewriter ribbon
  • Correction tape cartridge

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off and unplug the typewriter.

    • 2

Install typewriter ribbon. Lift the top off the typewriter and release the latch holding the ribbon cassette in place. Note the position of the old cassette. Insert the new ribbon cassette and turn the hand-feed knob a few times to release the ribbon.

    • 3

Install correction tape. The correction tape is secured into the typewriter near the ribbon. Secure the correction tape the same way you secured the ribbon, then close the top of the typewriter.

    • 4

Feed paper into the top of the typewriter. Turn the knob protruding from the right side of the machine to the right; this will spin the roller and feed the paper into place. Stop turning the knob when the sheet of paper protrudes about one half-inch out of the top of the typewriter. The rest of the paper will automatically move through the typewriter as you type.

    • 5

Plug the typewriter in, turn on the power and begin typing.
