How to Care for Wedgwood Jasperware

First introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in the mid-1770s, Jasperware is a durable form of ceramic with a matt-colored ground and raised white decorative vignettes. Issued in various shades of blue, green, yellow and black, its inspiration was the art of classical Greece and Rome, then very much in vogue. This classical aesthetic has stayed unchanged well into modern times. Because it is so durable, Jasperware requires little in the way of special care to maintain it in optimum condition. It can be displayed with confidence in most places around the home, with no need for precautions such as glazed cabinets.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse pieces of Jasperware in lukewarm water every now and then, sponging gently around the edges of any decorative features. Because of its textured surface, Jasperware is prone to dust build-up. While this isn't harmful, it can be a nuisance to remove if it is allowed to accumulate.

    • 2

Avoid leaving pieces of Jasperware outside during very cold or damp conditions. Although tough, they are not intended for outdoor use, and long periods exposed to the elements will probably result in crazing and discoloration.

    • 3

Don't leave pieces of Jasperware on sunny windowsills if you live in a place where the sunlight is especially strong over extended periods of time. Extremely strong direct sunlight can cause slight variations in color and small amounts of crazing. This isn't something you need to worry about if you live in a temperate climate.
