Search for your item on an online marketplace such as eBay, Amazon or Bing Shopping. Even if you can't find the exact item you have in hand, you may find something similar enough to obtain a rough estimate of its value. Remember, though, that small details can vastly affect the antique's value.
Purchase an antique reference guide such as "Warman's Antiques &Collectibles Price Guide," "Antique Trader Book Collector's Price Guide" or "Kovels' Antiques &Collectibles Price Guide." Each is available at a relatively low cost, especially when you purchase a used copy online. Be sure to purchase the most recent edition available.
Visit an online antique appraisal web site for a professional evaluation. Popular sites include "Kovels," "Instappraisal" and "What's It Worth To You?" These sites may provide their services at a charge but have the available resources and experience to provide an accurate appraisal.
Bring the item to an antique dealer's convention or collectibles shop. A firsthand examination by a professional in the field will always yield the best results. They may be able to provide you with additional details and advice on how to properly care for the item.
