How to Finish a Wooden Nightstick With Linseed Oil

Wooden nightsticks, or truncheons, were used by police forces across the world for centuries until recently, when they were replaced by ones made of composite materials. Now all wooden versions are either antique collectibles or used for personal defense. As they are made out of wood, it is important to finish the wood with oil. Linseed is a popular choice because when it hardens it forms a plastic finish over the wood that protects it both from the weather and other kinds of damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the wood with a damp cloth so it is free of any dust and use sandpaper to remove any cracks or breaks in the old finish.

    • 2

Pour some linseed oil onto a cloth and rub into the nightstick, ensuring there is an even layer of oil over the entire nightstick.

    • 3

Allow the oil to dry for at least 24 hours or follow the linseed oil manufacturer's guidelines.

    • 4

Apply a second coat of oil in the same way and leave to dry. A great finish on the wood requires several layers of oil.

    • 5

Buff the nightstick with a soft cloth to bring a shine to the layers of linseed oil.
