Why Won't the Pulley Weight Drop Down on a Floor Clock?

Pulley weights are found on grandfather clocks. The weights are responsible for the clock functioning properly. The weights work with inner mechanisms and a prism and chimes.
  1. Function

    • Readjust the weights. The weights need to be in their proper location for the clock to function properly. Look at the bottom of the weights to see where they are marked. The weights will have left, right or center written on the bottom. Adjust weights accordingly if they are tangled.

    Features

    • The pendulum should not be crooked or twisted, or hitting the weights. Remove the pendulum from the clock. Put on a pair of cotton gloves to keep the clock parts from becoming marked or oily from palm sweat or hand lotion. Hold the pendulum below and grasp the pendulum bob with other hand. Adjust the bob, so that the pendulum swings freely, away from the weights.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Click the automatic nighttime shut-off feature if present on the clock, to the "silent" mode. The center weight should drop faster than the left and right weights, and pull the other weights into proper alignment.
