How to Hunt for Swarovski

Ever since a mouse inaugurated their "Silver Crystal" line in 1976, Swarovski has been strongly associated in the collector's market with charming cut-glass animals. However, by this time the Austrian firm had already been renowned for its precision craftsmanship for some 80 years. As of 2010, Swarovski continues to innovate with products such as their "Crystal Tattoos" line of bling to be worn on the skin. Anyone hunting for Swarovski bargains shouldn't forget to explore the many different facets of a glittering success story.

Instructions

Search for Swarovski animals online, in antique stores and even at yard sales. On online auction sites, browse categories such as Collectibles, Decorative Ornaments and Animals. Ideally, only buy items with their original packaging, as these will be easier to sell at a later date. Check that the pieces bear a laser-etched logo. Expect to pay no more than $10 for a little mouse or cat, but brace yourself for price tags of $200 or more for statement pieces such as the lion in Swarovski's African wildlife series.

Rummage through vintage fashion stores and browse specialist online sites for dresses and accessories adorned with Swarovski crystals. From the 1930s, Swarovski issued jeweled lace and bands that could be applied to clothes, handbags, shoes and even hats, while in the 1970s they went one step further with iron-on crystal transfers. These garments won't bear the Swarovski name, so you'll have to use your own judgment, although it's doubtful you'll see anything as eye-catching as the Swarovski crystal-encrusted dress Marilyn Monroe wore for President Kennedy's birthday party in 1962.

Look out for Swarovski jewelry and watches by scouring stalls and hunting through online auction sites under categories such as Costume Jewelry and Designer Watches. Online prices can range from $20 to $200.
