How to Wrap Handles

Antiques and collectibles require special care when moving them or placing them into storage. Antique cups or other items that have handles must be properly wrapped. The value of an antique drops dramatically once it is damaged. A damaged or broken handle may turn a once-valuable piece into a novelty item. Properly wrapping handles and the rest of the piece will ensure the value and beauty of the piece remains intact.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the space between the handle and the body of the cup with ¼-inch packing foam. This foam is easy to work with and will form to any shape. Place enough foam in the handle space to fill the space. Don't over-fill the space. That can cause pressure on the handle which can lead to hair cracks and weakening of the handle.

    • 2

Wrap several layers of packing paper around the handle and the body of the cup. The packing paper should be wrapped tight enough so that it supports the handle. Use a piece of tape to secure the edges of packing paper into place.

    • 3

Surround the entire cup with a double layer of ¼ inch bubble wrap. The bubble wrap will absorb many of the bumps and jolts that may occur during shipping or in storage.
