How to Clean Antique High Grade Silver Plate

Since silver has a way of tarnishing quickly, the thought of caring for high-quality antique silver may be enough to deter some from collecting or using silver dishes, candlesticks and other decor. Though silver does require attention and time to ensure it remains beautiful for a lifetime, the process isn't difficult. The key to keeping silver looking new and shiny is routine use and maintenance along with taking a few precautions when handling and storing.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear cotton gloves when cleaning your antique silver. Oils from skin accelerate tarnishing, so avoid contact between your hands and the silver. Rubber and latex gloves will tarnish the silver as well.

    • 2

Wash your silver gently after each use. Use a mild detergent that is phosphate-free and not lemon scented. Regular washing greatly reduces the likelihood of the silver tarnishing.

    • 3

Choose a high-quality silver polish with a long-lasting tarnish barrier.

    • 4

Use a cellulose sponge to apply polish to the silver.

    • 5

Use a soft cloth or cotton ball to polish the silver. Make sure to rotate the cotton or cloth often as particles removed from the silver are abrasive and damage the piece if rubbed against it.

    • 6

Dry the silver immediately by using a soft cotton cloth. For hard to reach areas, you may also use a hair dryer to ensure the piece is completely dry before storage.
