How to Lubricate Antique Transits

Theodolites are the primary tool of the surveyor. They can be used to calculate a number of different values necessary in surveying, but have engineering, architectural and rocket science applications as well. Surveying Theodolites developed in the 19th century were called "transits" and many are still around today. Knowing how to properly lubricate antique transits can keep them in working order and ensure they last for many years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any dust or debris from the antique transit with a clean handkerchief. Never use water, oils or any cleaning compound to clean antique transits.

    • 2

Apply watch oil to the joint of a moving part of the antique transit. If the antique transit is used primarily in a very cold climate, use graphite lubricant.

    • 3

Wipe away any excess lubricant with a clean handkerchief.

    • 4

Move the oiled part through its full range of motion. If the part sticks at any point, reapply lubricant to that section and try moving the part through its full range of motion again.

    • 5

Wipe away any excess lubricant from the moving parts of the antique transit with a clean handkerchief.
